The ARX-160 was designed in the early 2000s. The initial development was part of the Soldato Futuro (Soldier of the Future) program meant to create an advanced assault rifle to replace older Berettas. At first, the plan was only to slightly update the old rifles by replacing materials with more modern ones. But then ordering customers started requesting modularity, stock length adjustment, and other features.
After evaluating the market prospects, the company’s managers decided to expand the possible ammo range used by the rifle. In addition to standard NATO 5.56mm cartridge support, they implemented in the rifle an option for using the Soviet 7.62x39mm cartridge - not so fashionable and modern, but thanks to the Kalashnikov assault rifle, extremely common around the world. This option led the special forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan to adopt the rifle.
