IL2: STURMOVIK - IL-2 mod. 1942 - Key Art

The Il-2, designed by Sergey Ilyushin and his team, was the primary ground attack aircraft and the most widespread Soviet aircraft during WWII. The Il-2's armor was unique for its time, as it served as part of the monocoque structure which saved weight and protected the pilot, engine, and fuel tanks. The wings and tail were constructed with plywood. In 1942, additional armor was added to the top of the pilot's canopy for maximum protection. At the time, the plane was built without any defensive weapons, but frontline units often removed the rear fuel tank to make room for a defensive ShKAS machine gun and a rear gunner.
